The Most Underrated Form of Literature

Heyo people! Hope you’re having fun in summer break! I know most of you won’t read this when you are supposed to be having fun and playing games which is why I have tried to keep this post as short as I can. Although believe me when I say this post can make your vacations 10 times better. So, this whole thing started when a friend of mine asked my opinion on comic books (I’m not gonna say graphic novels, its practically the same thing!)…

If you didn’t know already, I am used to being correct. Not bragging or being a know-it-all but I absolutely hate it when I’m wrong. Don’t get me wrong I’m definitely not your conservative reader who is satisfied by reading the “classics” and then brag about how cool they are and how modern literature sucks. NOPE. But I do have some very – for lack of a better word – quirky preferences. I am choosy when it comes to reading. And I definitely don’t shy away from talking to people about it. One such type of literature which I have absolutely hated is comics (or graphic novels ๐Ÿ˜ก). It isn’t anything to do with me not liking the plot or characters of comics, the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe was based off of comics which shows how awesome comics are.

Why do I hate comics then? Well, it has something to do with me being weird. Most of you don’t know this but I have been reading 200 page only words books way before my peers did. I was reading Harry Potter when they were just starting with Goldilocks and Red Riding Hood. It did turn out to be a good thing which contributed a lot to my confidence and vocabulary but nothing ever comes without downfalls. I was deemed “weird” for reading heavy books with no pictures. On top of that my classmates actually laughed at me when a teacher praised me for reading books (jokes on them though, look who is benefitting from being “weird”).

This has a lot to do with why I despised picture books since 3rd grade. Pop culture definitely didn’t help when they made jokes about how “immature” and “childish” it was to read such books. When I got introduced to the idea of comics I didn’t even try to read these books. I rejected them and continued doing my own thing. All of this worked until a friend of mine recently asked me if I read any webtoons. Having no idea about what webtoons actually are I quickly googled them and saw that they are a website to read digital comics that release every week. I made up my mind to just say no and leave it at that but curiosity (and my awesome polite nature) made me read atleast one before I told my friend what I think of comics. That’s when I was given a suggestion to read a webtoon called “God of High School” which is basically a story about a guy Mori Jin who wants to know if he is the strongest fighter and participates in a tournament called God of High School. The comic started with some pretty awesome martial arts fighting scenes which quickly escalated to super saiyan modes and borrowing powers from god and whatnot.

My point is – it wasn’t bad. This was a huge eye-opening moment for me. I could read cool stories while giving my brain some relaxation. I use a lot of thinking power when I read mainly to visualize or imagine scenes while reading them in a text form. Basically, my brain is converting the written text into images so that I enjoy the experience better. But when reading these comics I don’t have to take any extra steps to visualize because I can see the characters on the pages with expression saying their dialogues! It was great. So for the past couple weeks I have been glued to my phone reading as many of these comics as I could. Believe me when I say they’re addictive. Having rejected comics like a huge part of the reading community I wasn’t just holding myself back as a reader but also stopping myself from experiencing such a wonderful combination of literature and art.

Unfortunately, as I said I have been glued to my phone screen for two whole weeks which is a bother for my eyes. My Kindle doesn’t do that kind of damage to my eyes due the the light filtering or whatever. Additionally, reading is something that I love doing and a hug part of that is imagination, I don’t wanna ruin all of it just because of a lame excuse while in fact I’m being lazy. This is why I’ll be going back to the text-based form of books. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll still read some awesome webtoons and comics that I have come to like. I’ll still read those, just not as a form of reading.

On that note I’d also like to say that comics are a huge part of literature and targeting people who read them is a wrong thing so if you do it then I request you to stop doing it (I learnt it by being wrong so take my advice). The reading community is a huge part of the whole heavenly experience of reading and ruining it just because you don’t agree with someone’s taste is extremely selfish and wrong.

That was it for this week, hope you liked it! You can subscribe to the blog at the bottom of this page so that you will get a notification each time I post! I’ll see you next week with another post, till then wear your masks and read. PeaceโœŒ
