Pop Culture has popularized fantasy creatures. Nowadays everybody knows at least a couple of fantasy creatures. In this article I am going to discuss these creatures, list down their positive and negative sides, roast them and hopefully meet some when they read this article and come to kill me.
Now when I take upon the task of talking about these creatures, I mean only the popular ones, if I write an article discussing all of them, I would probably take a month or two and I don’t have that kind of time to spend on this. For example – None of you would care about Bannik – A Slavic bathhouse spirit, would you?
Demon – An evil minion of Satan a.k.a The Devil. These guys come in various breeds, some are smart, some are dumb, but all are evil. Most movies depict them in red colour, though there are some books that show them as very humanoid except for their horns. Then there are Greater Demons which are stronger than normal level demons so basically just like any RPG game.
Dragon – These guys are so cool. They can fly. They can breathe fire. They have foot-long claws. They have eyes with slits. In some books, there are small dragons. But dragons are really smart regardless of their sizes. In some books there are dragon shifters, so basically humans who can shift into dragons. I know!! Double cool!! They also have healing scales used in magic potions. The only downside of a dragon is that it’s not good at fighting in small spaces and that’s probably the only way you can kill a dragon, well other than killing it from inside which is probably impossible considering that it will chew before swallowing unlike what most books and movies show.
Dwarf – Grumpy creatures who live in the dark. They are the perfect depiction of what any 5-year old is afraid of other than the fact that they are small. Which takes away all the scary points, turning these people into lovable friends of Snow White. Most books especially related to Norse Mythology say that they are blacksmiths who create weapons and such.
Elf – These are high and mighty creatures. In the Magnus Chase books, they can perform magic, rune magic to be precise. In J. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, they are also good warriors and ride on a moose, the moose part is weird but the same book consists of a Gollum who talks to his ring which can turn people invisible, so can’t judge the moose…
Fae – These creatures are created by Angel and Demon blood. They look very beautiful because of the Angel blood but are very evil because of the Demon blood. They can’t lie but are really good at bending their words carefully. They are very tricky and have a weird rule that says that if you eat faery food then you will be trapped in their courtroom and have to serve their queen, or at least this is what happens in the Mortal Instrument Series.
Goblins, Orcs, Trolls & Ogres – I have grouped these guys together because there isn’t much to say about these guys. Here’s their deal – Goblins like money and gold, they steal. Orcs like to dead people, they kill. Trolls like food and darkness, they eat and live underground. Ogres are huge and hungry, so they eat a lot. Their preferred diet is children. I know, it’s disgusting, which is why I didn’t wanna spend much time on these guys. But all of them pack a punch and most books have the protagonist battle these guys. I don’t know any book where any of them are protagonist but have read some, where these guys are shown as good people, well compared to the bad guys in those books.
Mage – These guys are cool. They can do magic. Which is pretty much all we know about them. One of my favourite books “The Menacing Misfits“, which I have reviewed has a protagonist who is a battle healer/mage. Go and read that book to find out more about it.
Shifter – These are people who can transform into animals. Some of them can shift into wolves, some can become lions, some coyotes while others turn into bears. They can turn whenever they want and aren’t bound by full moons or any other kind of weird rituals. Their main goal is protecting and defending others. So most of the time in most of the supernatural wars, shifters are always the ones who defend against the attacks of other supernatural. They are quite strong and can hold their own against most supernaturals including vampires but fall short while battling mages and dragons.
Vampire – Ohhh what can I say about these guys. They exist in every supernatural novel ever. Some depict these blood-suckers as good and some as bad. The #1 book that popularized these guys is Twilight and most of the human population love the Twilight series. Personally, I am not a huge fan of it because I thought it was pretty much senseless but people like it. Anyways, vampires are blood-suckers who have super strength and super speed. They have hard, cold and pale skin. Some books say that when a vampire is sucking the blood out of you its like taking a drug so its a very pleasing experience, not saying that you go to a vampire and ask them to suck on your blood because if they lose control and don’t stop drinking then you will probably be a blood-less corpse lying somewhere in the basement of a badass-looking bar.
Werewolves – Yaa I know what you must be thinking – “Hey man! You just covered werewolves didn’t you?”, well not quite. I covered shifters which are different from werewolves. Each shifter can transform into one animal but this is where the similarities end because shifters are not only wolf-shifters though they are the most common, there are coyote-shifters and even tiger-shifters. Werewolves shift on full moon nights other than the Twilight series’ werewolves who can transform whenever they want and the werewolves from “The Order” series where they turn when they are worried or afraid. They are very fast and strong. A full-grown werewolf is faster than even vampires and I personally find them a lot cooler than vampires. Of course not as cool as mages but…okay I have started blabbering, so let’s just move on.
Zombie – Undead dead people. This pretty much summaries what these beauties are. All of us know them, all of us have secretly seen their movies. The most popular creature in this article. They like to eat brains and are idiots. They are pretty dumb, even by my standards. So yaa, really dumb. They can’t even walk properly, I don’t know what’s their deal with walking straight but they are cool if you like disgusting corpses that can walk and like to eat your brains.
That summarises my thoughts on popular mythical creatures. If you want info on some other creature just ask and I will put it down in the comment’s section. You can subscribe to my blog at the bottom of the page if you liked this article. I will see you next week. Peace.
