Mental Decluttering
Welcome to Bookgest! I am not talking about space decluttering or house decluttering so if you are here for that I just wanted to clear that up. Now, I have been studying some psychology for a while and I have put a few techniques to practice. Most of these practices have proved to be really useful and have increased my productivity rate tenfold. I never thought that I would develop a professional full-fledged e-learning site in just one month!
One of these techniques is called Mental Decluttering. Now, if you go to the internet there are many articles about this but the main problem with most of them is that they don’t have simplicity and captivity. I am here just to share my experience. It worked for me, see if it works for you.
Before talking about the technique itself I would first like to talk about the symptoms of a cluttered mind and what harm it can do to you. So, cluttering happens mainly due to stress and negativity. And as we all know there is no break from stress in today’s environment. You cannot take one step without coming across a problem. So what mental cluttering does is that it makes you think about all the problems or distractions around you instead of focusing on their solutions or the task at hand. All of us know that everything in this universe except the universe itself is finite. The same way, our brain power is finite. If you have many tasks at hand then you cannot focus on one specific thing with all those extra and (unfortunately) useless thoughts going on.
So, imagine if you are free of all those extra thoughts then how productive and focused you can become! But as we know, everything has a pro and a con. The bad thing about mental decluttering is that it takes up a lot of time, but if you compare that with the time that you spend pondering over those extra thoughts then it will eventually be less. Another thing to keep in mind before decluttering is that it cannot only prove to be useful to you but also to those people around you. It will create a positive environment near you and will likely energize those around you.
Here are some ways that I use to declutter:
Stop Procrastinating
Clutter is nothing but delayed decisions, so instead of thinking that I will do this later, you should do it now so that it will not add up on your seemingly never-ending to-do list. Now I know that this is very hard, it’s not simple to do everything at the same time but you should try to do it. I am sure that even trying will help you a lot.
Avoid Multitasking
Does it always seem that there is a lot of work and it overwhelms you so much that you try to do all of it together? Well, don’t do that because if you multitask then each and everything that you do in that particular session will not be your best. This will also help you focus on one thing at a time and develop your skills around that topic. I am not saying that I don’t multitask, what I am trying to say is that……………don’t be like me. I mean it does help me get things done and also do things quite well but I have been getting painful headaches from 6thgrade practically every day, I also visited a doctor for it and I am on medications. The lesson that you learn from this is that: Don’t try to be like random strangers you read about on the internet J
Try meditation
Now I know that most of you out there would think of this as spiritual crap but it actually seems to work for me. Focusing on nothing is kind of the opposite of clutter so it is pretty practical. I am not going to write a whole lot about this because you can find hundreds of articles on the internet written by meditation experts that will guide you better than a hyperactive teenager will.
Declutter your workspace
According to a scientific study, if you work in a clean and aesthetic environment you can get that big thinking machine if yours to work really smoothly (for a change). Of course, I am not telling you to make your desk something like this:
But even something simple like this will do:
I recently decluttered my room and decorated it with some indoor plants and it works for me.
Practice Journaling
I have been maintaining a journal from a couple of months now, so I am a pretty reliable source for saying that it is awesome. Now, just writing a journal is useless, but reviewing it is what makes it a game-changer. Reviewing your journal can help you analyze and correct the decisions that you took or can even help you get an overview of whether you have spent your time well or just wasted it.
Thanks for reading the post. Next week I will try coming up with a book review because (surprise surprise) this blog is about books. Now, seeing my recent posts you can even say that I am putting in a lot of productivity and would like to continue it but that conversation is for another time. Anyways, please subscribe to this blog to get weekly notifications whenever I post something new. Also, comment down below what you think of this post and any idea that you have for more posts. Till next week, peace.
